Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week - September 11th, 2008

Hi, I'm Officer Paula Morrow, Crime Stoppers' Coordinator for Sangamon and Menard Counties.

Recently in Sangamon County, we have seen an increase in robberies. There are several things that you can to do to help protect yourself from becoming a victim of this and other crimes. First, if you must walk or bicycle after dark, don't do it alone. Travel with a companion. Often if there is more than one person, a single attacker would be discouraged from targeting you. If you must travel at night alone, always be aware of your surroundings. You should pay attention to people, bicyclists or cars that may appear to be circling or paying "too much" attention to you. Don't walk with a headset on. Walk in well lit, populated areas. Know the neighborhood you are in and have a plan. Carry a cell phone in your hand or somewhere that you can easily get to it, but don't text while you are walking. Let someone know where you are going and how long you plan to be gone. If you are targeted, try to pay attention to as many details of your attacker as possible and report the incident to the police as soon as possible.

Your safety is our number one concern.
