September 1st through the 7th is National Crime Prevention Week, and it’s a good reminder that keeping our communities safe isn’t just the responsibility of law enforcement. We all have a role to play.

Crime prevention starts with some simple things we can all do. Lock your doors, windows, and vehicles. Keep outdoor areas well-lit, and don’t leave valuables where they can easily be seen.

But keeping our community safe goes beyond our own front doors. Get to know your neighbors, stay involved in what’s happening around you, and talk with your kids about making safe choices. And when something doesn’t look right, don't ignore it - report it.

Most importantly, look out for one another. Pay attention. Speak up. And don’t assume someone else will make the call.

Safer communities don’t happen by accident. They happen when all of us work together.

This week, Crime Stoppers is seeking information to help the Springfield Police Department to identify two individuals in reference to a stolen vehicle. 

On July 25th, 2026, officers were called to an area around the lake in reference to a vehicle being stolen.  It was reported that sometime in the early morning hours a 2020 Black Audi had been stolen.   Officers were able to recover the vehicle; however the investigation has led to two subjects needing to be identified that were possibly involved.

This week, Crime Stoppers and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in the disappearance of 22-year-old Brenda Bottoms. 

 In June of 1987, Brenda was reported missing.  She was last seen getting into a brown car that was driven by a white male on North 5th Street in Auburn, Illinois.

Investigators have recently received information that led them to believe Brenda knew the male subject who was driving the car and the persons who are responsible for her disappearance. 

Crime Stoppers and the Sheriff’s Office is encouraging anyone with information on the subjects or the circumstances of Brenda’s disappearance to call Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427, submit a tip on this website or use the P3 app.

This week, Crime Stoppers is seeking information to help the Springfield Police Department to identify two individuals involved in a burglary. 

On July 6th, 2026, around 1:00 am two black male suspects forced entry to Farm and Home, 2804 N Dirksen in Springfield, through a rear door. Once inside the suspects ran to the gun counter and broke the glass with an unknown object.  The suspects appear to get spooked and fled the store heading East. Both suspects were wearing all black.

This week, Crime Stoppers is seeking information to help the Springfield Police Department identify an individual involved in a retail theft.

On July 12th, 2026, a black female, wearing a blue shirt and shorts, entered Walmart, located at 2760 N Dirksen Parkway in Springfield, and selected a large amount of merchandise.  The suspect placed the merchandise in a cart while walking through the store. After gathering the items, the suspect exited the business without paying for the merchandise and fled the scene.
