This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information to assist the Springfield Police Department in reference to a retail theft.  On March 30th, 2024, officers were dispatched to Discount Tobacco, 1169 N 2nd St, in reference to a retail theft. The suspect, who was a black male wearing black sweatpants and an olive colored hooded shirt entered the store and asked an employee to see an item for sale.  When the employee turned around, he jumped over the counter grabbing cartons of cigarettes and fled the area. Police are looking for four subjects involved in a home invasion which occurred in Auburn in the early morning hours of October 21st. A female and her two children were awoken by the sounds of someone prying on a back door to their residence shortly before the subjects gained entry and threatened to shoot her. After demanding the victims money and the keys to her car, the suspects left in her car with the her television and other electronics.

For the third week in a row Crime Stoppers is featuring a robbery in which a handgun is believed to have been used, and we’ve got reward money of up to $2500 if somebody comes forward with information that leads to an arrest of the suspect. Police are looking for a white male in his 40’s who robbed the Family Video store at 930 W Jefferson late in the evening on October 20th. The suspect stood between 5 foot seven and five foot nine inches tall and weighed between140 and 160 pounds. He had scruffy facial hair and was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and athletic shoes.

An armed robbery occurred at Boost Mobile phone store on Stevenson Drive on October 10th and police are now attempting to identify the two perpetrators. After driving by the store a couple times and casing the business earlier on the 10th, the two subjects entered the store- with weapons- shortly after 7 in the evening. The clerk was threatened with a black semi automatic handgun, believed to be a 9 mm, in the robbery. Several phones from the business were taken in the armed robbery and detectives are analyzing surveillance video from multiple sources. The robbery suspects used a silver SUV in the commission of the robbery.

A robbery occurred at the Kentucky Fried Chicken on north Ninth Street in Springfield on October 6th, and police are attempting to identify the lone male perpetrator. At approximately 4:25 in the afternoon, with other customers present, a light skinned black male wearing a brown and cream striped hooded sweatshirt entered the business and implied that he had a handgun concealed under his sweatshirt. Although the weapon was not seen, any person who commits a robbery by use of force with a weapon, whether seen or implied, is presumed to have used a weapon and is in violation of Illinois Aggravated Robbery statutes.  (continued)

Over the past few weeks there have been several break-ins to tobacco and cigarette shops in the area and police could use tips from the public to help solve these crimes. Several locations have been targeted and it’s not believed that all of the incidents are related. These types of crimes usually involve a coordinated effort of two or more persons to successfully pull off this type of burglary and any lead provided to Crime Stoppers will be fully investigated.  (continued)

Police are looking for two suspects involved in a forgery case in which an elderly victim’s caretaker, without authorization, wrote checks out of her personal account. Several Theft and Forgery warrants have been issued for the arrest of Springfield residents Joann Johnson and Tia Taylor, and police need your help in locating these suspects. I’ve posted photographs of the suspects on the Crime Stopper website Cashfortips.us in hopes that leads from the public will lead to their apprehension. Criminal incidents in which elderly or disabled people are victimized by those entrusted with their care are cruel crimes that must be stopped.

During the overnight hours of September 7th, three businesses in Springfield were burglarized and police believe there were at least two people involved in the burglaries. The doors of Darcy’s Pint, Capitol City Bar and Grill, and West Side Pub and Grill at Donnie B’s, one after the other, were forcibly entered. Once inside the perpetrators caused substantial damage to video gaming machines, automatic teller machines, and safes. They were able to escape with a substantial sum of money when the losses at all three burglaries were totaled.

The Springfield Police Department is investigating a burglary to the Burger King located on Veterans Parkway near White Oaks Mall which occurred during the overnight hours of August 23rd . Crime Stoppers is looking for tips to help solve this crime and close this case. The incident occurred between 1 and 2 am when a thin male made entry to the business and was able to defeat the safe and escape the business prior to the arrival of police. Although surveillance video did not provide police with a clear image that can be identified, investigators believe there is someone who can provide that identifying information or other details about the commercial burglary and theft.
